While First 4 Figures brought an armada of amazing statue reveals to New York Comic Con last year, what they didn’t really bring with them was anything to sell—ultimately making NYCC 2017 an EXTREMELY costly show. But F4F always learns from their mistakes and grows from them, which is why they’ve reopened pre-orders for all in-production items for GamesCom 2018, and also debuted some brand new affordable PVCs at the event—including the Solid Snake SD and SD Ornstein figures!
After First4Figures debuted their immensely popular Breath of the Wild Link and Crash Bandicoot PVC statues last year, it seemed clear that PVC was going to be a big part of F4F’s future.
And it turns out Link and Crash really were just the tip of the iceberg, as the number of PVC statues being released by F4F looks ready to multiply exponentially over the coming years! Not only did the game-accurate TF (True Form) Spyro the Dragon and Okami Amaterasu figures debut at GamesCom 2018, but we also got the full reveals of two new figures (plus variants): Solid Snake SD and Ornstein SD!
The response to the Metal Gear Solid Solid Snake 1/4 Statue that was revealed last year was tremendous, so it shouldn’t come as a humongous surprise that First4Figures has chosen Metal Gear Solid as the second franchise to produce SD (Super-Deformed) figures from.
F4F SD PVCs kicked off with Dark Souls SD Artorias and Solaire figures earlier this year, and those figures were exceptionally popular, so it makes complete sense for First 4 Figures to pursue another mature-oriented game to make cutesy character versions of.
While not everyone can afford a $500 Metal Gear figure, almost everyone can afford a $100 SD version!
For the SD Solid Snake, First4Figures has gone for the same basic pose for Snake himself, but simplified the design of the base. There’s no giant wall or rotating ammo box—Snake himself is the featured attraction this time out.
The F4F Exclusive Solid Snake SD version will feature light up flames on the base with “always on” and “pulsing” modes.
Just like for the 1:4 scale resin MGS Snake, there will be two variants available: a Neon Green Stealth Snake (perhaps inspired by the popular Nendoroid version) and a “Coke Bottle” clear Stealth Snake SD. These variants are going to look amazing with the EX light-up flame lighting part of them up!
A Solid Snake SD Essential Edition Triple Pack with all three varieties of SD Snake will also be available at a discounted price of $269.99. I’ve always sort of regretted only pre-ordering the Neon Green and EX Snake Combo Pack for the 1/4 versions, so I’m psyched to have a chance for a little “Coke Bottle”-colored Snake in my home.
But Metal Gear Solid wasn’t the only series getting Super-Deformed love at GamesCom 2018: the third character in the Dark Souls SD line also premiered in full at the show—Ornstein SD!
We’d seen several sneak peeks of this SD Ornstein PVC Statue in the past, so seeing him as a whole wasn’t shocking. Even so, I’m really taken aback by just how dang cute this lil’ Dragon Slayer is!
Those following the SD Dark Souls line thus far won’t be surprised by the EX version of Orny’s special feature: light-up electricity effects surrounding the base (with “always on” and “pulsing” modes, of course).
First 4 Figures CEO also teased at the show that a variant of Ornstein SD would be released! What could that be? Hmmm…
The First4Figures Metal Gear Solid SD Snake and Dark Souls SD Ornstein figures will be available for order on the F4F website sometime this winter, with both scheduled to arrive in mid-2019. The EXclusive versions (and the Stealth Snake variants) are only available for a limited time and solely direct through F4F, so make sure to stay tuned so you don’t miss those for your collections.
What do you think of the 2018 GamesCom reveals for the First 4 Figures Super Deformed statues series? Are you interested in SD Metal Gear statues, and who (if anyone) from MGS would you want after Snake? And are you continuing the Dark Souls SD series with Ornstein, or are you all set after Artorias and Solaire?
