Although it’s one of the most popular video game franchises of the 21st century (and perhaps of all-time), Kingdom Hearts fans suffered while a relative drizzle of new toys from Square-Enix were all that were released for years. But several other companies obtained the Kingdom Hearts license in 2017 and started putting out new figures, including Diamond Select Toys. And at New York Toy Fair 2018, DST showed off all the goodness they’ve got planned for 2018, including more Kingdom Hearts Select figures and Minimates!
While there weren’t any previously announced Kingdom Hearts Select figures on display at Toy Fair, I did get to see Series 2 in-person for the first time (after it went up for pre-order earlier this winter), and was very impressed.
Wave 2 Includes:
- Roxas, Donald and Goofy 3-Pack
- Pete, Heartless Soldier, Chip and Dale 4-Pack
- Aqua and Birth By Sleep Goofy 2-Pack
Roxas is my favorite character in Kingdom Hearts by a wide margin, so I’m psyched we’re finally getting him this fall (after his prototype debuted at New York Toy Fair 2017 last February).
I think the expression and details Diamond Select Toys has given Roxas is exceptional. Here’s hoping we get an Organization XIII Roxas down the road.
Meanwhile, Pete has been a Disney fave of mine since I was a little kid watching Goof Troop, so I’m pretty tickled to be getting my first Pete action figure later this year. He’s a big figure on his own, making him ideal to pack with little Chip and Dale.
One major news item that I learned about Kingdom Hearts Select Series 2 at Toy Fair is that the Aqua & Goofy two-pack will be exclusively released at comic book and specialty stores.
That means that you’ll be able to snag Birth by Sleep Goofy and Aqua from your local comic book store or various online retailers, but they won’t be appearing at retail stores such as Target, Gamestop or Toys R Us at all.
Aqua is a pretty popular character, although she’s not nearly as well-known as Sora and Roxas and the Disney characters, so I think it’s a smart move on DST’s part to keep the quantities of their Kingdom Heart Select Aqua figure a bit more limited than the other characters in the series.
Along with the second series of regular action figures, DST also brought along Kingdom Hearts Minimates Series 2! The series will consist of the following:
- Master Form Sora (Yellow) & Heartless Soldier
- Pete & King Mickey (Organization XIII Outfit)
- Space Paranoids Goofy (Tron) & An Undisclosed Figure
Considering we have all four Kingdom Hearts II Sora colorways now as Select figures, I don’t think it’s a stretch that we’ll be getting the Final, Wisdom, and Brave forms eventually to match this Master Form Sora. DST would be crazy not to do all four colors, honestly.
In addition, we’re going to be getting one of the most unique Minimates vehicles in quite some time, when the Minimates Tron Lightcycle Deluxe set is released! It looked like the set will come with Space Paranoids (Tron) Sora as a pack-in figure.
I was honored and privileged to have the special opportunity to photograph a quintet of upcoming retailer exclusives that weren’t part of the regular display at the booth.
First, we’ve got the first-ever action figure based off of the Timeless River world in Kingdom Hearts II: Select Timeless Sora!
Rather than just recoloring the existing Sora in greyscale, DST invested in the new tooling that was necessary to make the figure authentic to the in-game appearance of Timeless River Sora.
Zach Oat from Diamond Select Toys indicated to me that Walgreens may be getting a new Timeless River figure with each upcoming wave, so it sounds like Timeless Donald and Goofy may not be TOO far behind Sora!
The other four exclusives I got to see were for Toys R Us: a pair of exclusive two-packs giving us Timeless River Sora & Goofy and Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck.
TRU will be receiving these packs instead of the Tron packs in the Kingdom Hearts Minimates assortments that they receive.
Kingdom Hearts Select Series 2 is now available for order, and is scheduled to be released in August 2018. Entertainment Earth has an awesome price of $44.99 for the Kingdom Hearts Series 2 set—WAY below the $75 MSRP! I placed my order with EE, as I can’t imagine anywhere else will have a better price than $15 per pack.
What do you think of the second wave of Kingdom Hearts Minimates and Select Figures, gamer fans? Will any (or all!) of these figures be making their way into your household later on this year?
I really hope The Deep (local comic store) gets that Aqua ‘n Goofy 2-pack!
They can order it through Diamond Previews magazine! Just drop by the store and tell them you want that pack so that they make sure to order one! 😉
