Some of the biggest—and most surprising—news going in New York Toy Fair 2018 this month was the announcement that Diamond Select Toys had obtained the license to produce Sonic the Hedgehog figures and statues. Coupled with the upcoming IDW Publishing Sonic the Hedgehog comic book, and it’s clear that a new day is dawning for the Blue Blue! I was excited to be among the first collectors in the world to see the DST Sonic toys at the 2018 Toy Fair. What did I see and learn and how impressed am I? Read on…
Diamond Select Toys is quickly risen to become in the upper-echelon of my favorite toy companies over the course of the last few years. They’re giving Kingdom Hearts the royal treatment, and the low-priced Marvel Gallery PVC statues series is one of my favorite lines going today.
So it was with pure delight that the very first Sonic-related things that caught my eye at the DST Toy Fair 2018 booth were the first two in a series of Sonic the Hedgehog Gallery PVC statues! Assuming they’re priced similarly to the Marvel Gallery statues, they should retail for ~$45.
Diamond Select had two characters on display in their booth: Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails. Both statues look to be around 9” tall and appear to be getting an early release at GameStop stores, where they’ll be timed exclusives for about six months after release.
Of the two, the Tails Gallery PVC Statue was definitely my favorite. It depicts Tails flying above a super-cool checkerboard base and reaching for a purple Chaos Emerald.
I flat-out LOVE that DST chose to actual sculpt two tails for Miles “Tails” Prower, rather than just a disc-like blur.
This is an absolute must-have for me—and thousands of other Tails fans. Good work, DST!
The Sonic the Hedgehog Gallery PVC Statue (which was still Pending Approval as of Toy Fair) was also looking very slick, with Sonic clutching a power ring in one hand another purple Chaos Emerald in the other.
The translucent yellow effects at Sonic’s feet look great, and the Green Hill Zone diorama-style base is as classic as can be.
In addition to the PVC Gallery statues, Diamond Select Toys also showed off their first eight Sonic action figures: Minimates!
The line will begin with a special four-pack box set, and then will continue with a series of two-packs. The eight characters shown at Toy Fair were two plain versions of Sonic, Silver the Hedgehog, Dr. Robotnik (Eggman), Cream the Rabbit & Cheese the Chao, Amy Rose, Miles “Tails” Prower and Super Sonic.
The Minimates style isn’t for everyone, but have no fear, Sonic fans: more traditional Sonic the Hedgehog figures will be coming from DST later on, even though they weren’t ready to be revealed at the 2018 New York Toy Fair. Diamond Select makes some of my favorite action figures out there today, so I have little doubt they’ll be worth the wait.
I’ll post updates as these items go up for sale throughout the year, so stay tuned, Sonic fans. And if you want to receive alerts whenever news or photos are posted, be sure to follow the Gamer Toy News Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages.
What do you think of the first Sonic the Hedgehog toys coming from Diamond Select, Sonic fans? Will any of these Minimates figures or PVC Statue be joining your collection later this year?
